GRANITE BAY, Calif. – Freshman Alyssa Gutierrez won two events, including a massive personal record of four minutes, 53.56 seconds in the 1,600-meter run, leading St. Francis in the third of three Sierra Foothill League track & field center meets Wednesday. The meet was hosted at Granite Bay, with Del Oro and Oak Ridge also in attendance.
Although team scores were not compiled, the head-to-head matchups in the SFL center meets contribute to the final league standings.
Gutierrez trimmed almost four seconds from her previous 1,600 PR of 4:57.34 from the Dublin Distance Fiesta one month earlier. The 4:53.56 vaulted her from fourth to third in the school record book, ahead of Peyton Bilo's 4:57.02 at the 2015 Sacramento Meet of Champions. Only two individuals have run four laps faster in a Troubadour singlet: Cate Joaquin (4:46.42) and Tatiana Cornejo (4:51.61), both at the 2022 Sac-Joaquin Section finals. Joaquin went on to run at Georgetown while Cornejo has enjoyed a record-setting career at Cal Poly.
Gutierrez led a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the 1,600, with Sophia Kadel (5:09.34), Miya Menza (5:13.08) and Bianka Bagatelos (5:16.52) following in second through fourth, respectively. In fact, St. Francis held a superfecta in both versions of the 1,600, as freshman Celeste Ramos won the JV race at 5:36.40, almost 10 seconds faster than teammate runner-up Sophia Hernandez' 5:46.09.
Gutierrez snared her second victory in the meet's penultimate girls' event, the 3,200 meters. To expedite the meet, all four divisions – girls' JV and varsity plus boys' JV and varsity – were combined into a single race. However, when separated by each grouping, Gutierrez led a first-through-sixth Troubie finish in the girls' varsity field with a 11:19.45, well in front of teammate and second-place Mia Hollar (11:37.33). Meanwhile, Hernandez added a first place of her own, taking down the JV field of that race with her 12.29.50, leading a 1-2-3 SF sweep.
Junior Jasleen Gandhoke also picked up an event win with a dominating 100 hurdles victory. She ran 15.63 despite a headwind of 2.2 meters per second, more than a second faster than the trio of Del Oro runners in second through fourth. Senior Antonija Jezildzic captured the varsity discus throw as the only entrant in the field to crack the century mark, firing a winning throw of 103 feet, 8 inches. Finally, freshman Abby Carrothers won the varsity shot put with a push of 33 feet, 3 inches – just three inches shy of her PR from the March 28 Holy Spikes meet. Carrothers already holds the school freshman record for that event.
Among JV events, Ramos added a second victory thanks to a strong finish in the JV girls' 800. She crossed in 2:30.99, overtaking Oak Ridge's Elise Sale on the second lap. Other JV wins belonged to Emmy Cheatham, who claimed the discus throw at 73-10 before finishing second to teammate Olivia Santos, who took down the shot put at 23-9.
St. Francis track & field splits up for a variety of meets in the next two weeks. The 800, 1,600 and 3,200 runners return to action at Sheldon's Glenn Rogers Distance Carnival on April 24, while a select crew of Troubies will enter the Sacramento Meet of Champions on April 25. These will be the last regular-season meets of the 2026 season, as the SFL championships will take place at Jesuit on April 29 and May 2. Update: St. Francis will not participate in the Cordova Throws Classic, as previously listed on the schedule.
