More records fall in Friday split-squad action

PLACER & FAIR OAKS, Calif. – St. Francis set school records in each of the 800-meter sprint medley relay and the 4x200 relay at Placer High School's Lefebvre Relays track & field meet, while freshman Alyssa Gutierrez posted a meet record and ran the third-fastest 3,200 in Troubadour history at Bella Vista's Bronco Roundup Distance Carnival in Fair Oaks.

The Troubadours split their squad at two meets on Friday. Sprinters, hurdles, throwers and jumpers made the trek up Interstate 80 to Placer for the relay meet, while SF middle distance and distance runners competed at BV.

The foursome of Lucia Vicio, Emma Bugarin, Gaby Gonzalez, Alexa Randall compiled a winning time of one minutes, 49.21 seconds in the SMR, more than two seconds faster than Twelve Bridges (1:51.17) for the meet total and 0.35 better than the Troubadours' old record of 1:49.56. Margaret Kashuba, Brianna Charles, Cekarri Nixon and Mikaela Vaden held the old school benchmark of 1:49.56 for more than 15 years, having posted that time at the 2010 Woody Wilson Invitational at UC Davis.

Then soon after that performance, the 4x200 squad of Gonzalez, Randall, Bugarin and Jasleen Gandhoke went 1:44.29, also beating Twelve Bridges (1:45.76) and setting a meet record. That same crew had run a 1:45.85 at Cordova's Clarke Massey Relays just six days prior, which in turn had broken a 22-year-old SF standard. The Troubie 4x200 eclipsed Sheldon's old LeFebvre meet record of 1:45.15, also set in 2004.

The Vicio/Bugarin/Gonzalez/Randall team opened the meet with a victorious 49.30 in the 4x100, leading a tough heat that also featured Del Oro (50.53), Twelve Bridges (50.92) and Roseville (50.98). That ranks 14th in school history but far the fastest time for a Troubie 4x100 in the first half of a season. All other sub-50 times came in either league, section or state championships; or at the Sacramento Meet of Champions. In fact, the last time a St. Francis 4x100 went faster than 51 seconds was a 50.91 by the squad of Abigail Palko, Ruth Palko, Sophia Young and Jaycee DeFazio at Inderkum's Welcome to the Jungle meet on Leap Year Day of 2020.

Gutierrez dominated the 3,200 field with her time of 10:27.63, eclipsing the 2022 meet record of 10:32.15 by St. Francis' Cate Joaquin. She crossed the finish line more than 20 seconds ahead of Norah Feldt of Davis (10:47.50) and Brenna Mannion of Vista Del Lago (10:48.26). Gutierrez previously ran a 10:37.36 at the Grizzly 3,200 during cross country season, then leap-frogged ahead of Sydney Vandegrift (10:32.12 in 2017) and Peyton Bilo (10:31.67 in 2015). She now ranks behind only Joaquin (10:29.97 at the 2022 Arcadia Invite) and Lauren LaRocco (10:23.10 at the 2014 state meet) in St. Francis history.

Meanwhile in the same section, sophomore Miya Menza ran an eighth-place 10:58.47, lopping exactly a half second from her previous PB. Menza ranks eighth in school records, just behind Miranda Myers and her 10:58.15 from the 2013 Sac-Joaquin Section championship.

The top three finishers in any given heat at the Bronco Roundup earn a souvenir T-shirt, while the winners of the fastest heats also snare a cowboy hat. Prior to Gutierrez' PR in the second heat, Emily Colonnello won the first section of the 3,200 with a 11:37.22. In all, four Troubies won their respective sections. Celeste Ramos won the fifth heat of the girls' 1,600 at 5:43.31, beating Davis' Cora Bowman by a margin of 1.68 seconds. Giuliana Allen captured the sixth heat of the 800 with a 2:43.10, better than a second faster than McClatchy's Leila Oki (2:44.36).
The LeFebvre and Bronco meets ended what was already a successful week for St. Francis track & field, which saw historic performances at the first Sierra Foothill League center meet on Thursday. The Troubies return to action on March 18 for the second SFL meet, this time at Rocklin with Whitney and Oak Ridge.
