SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman Bianka Bagatelos enjoyed the ninth-fastest 800-meter run in school history and the No. 2 time by a frosh runner at two minutes, 17.67 seconds, while Alyssa Gutierrez, Halle Welch and Jasleen Gandhoke each won varsity events, helping St. Francis compile winning totals of 119 (varsity) and 122 (junior varsity) in the Holy Spikes track & field meet at Jesuit High Saturday.
Holy Spikes, normally a head-to-head meet involving St. Francis, Jesuit and Christian Brothers, expanded to include athletes from Cardinal Newman, Bishop O'Dowd and Destiny Christian. The scoring thus followed a championship format rather than a dual. The Troubadours amassed 119 points in the varsity events, beating out rival CB (95), with Bishop O'Dowd (60), Cardinal Newman (44) and Destiny Christian (8) taking third through fifth with relatively small delegations.
The meet also provided a venue to honor 10 Troubadour seniors: Jordan Brace, Emma Bugarin, Chloe Harrison, Antonija Jezildzic, Colleen Medina, Makayla Miller, Abbey Pavelchik, Gianna Seghesio, Annie Swanson and Lucia Vicio.
Bagatelos runnered-up behind Newman junior Ashlin Mallon, whose winning 2:17.48 will move her into the top 10 of the North Coast Section this year. Bagatelos now ranks just a hundredth of a second behind Mikaela Vaden's 2:17.66 from the 2011 Sac-Joaquin Section finals. Additionally, her time also ranks second among all-time Troubie frosh runners, surpassing Kayla Towne's 2:18.20 and trailing only Ingrid Kantola's 2:15.93 from the 2001 SJS Masters meet. Kantola went on to compete for UCLA while Towne currently runs at UC Davis.
Bagatelos' mark should move her into the top five in the 2026 section rankings, depending other meets held over the weekend. Impressively, she overtook Falcon senior Veronica White (2:17.69) at the line by a mere 50th of a second. White entered the meet as the section's No. 4 runner in the 800.
Welch won the 1,600 meters with a 5:10.45 to lead a 1-2-3-4 sweep, good for 20 points in the event. Gutierrez followed with first place in the 3,200 at 11:36.23, forging a perfect 1-2-3-4-5 St. Francis finish and another 21 points toward the team total. Gandhoke easily won the varsity high jump at five feet, two inches, leading the Troubies to 15 total points there. Gandhoke added a second-place 44.62 in the 300 hurdles, breaking her previous best by 0.14 seconds. She remains third in the school record book for that event.
St. Francis also snared another 11 varsity points in the discus throw. While no competitor could keep pace with Dragon freshman Najae Ellison and the 123-4 she fired in the second round, Jezildzic finished second at 98-6, with Christie So (94-7) and Carley Glenn (84-8) popping sizable personal bests for third and fifth, respectively.
Among the JV events, freshman Abby Carrothers continues her meteoric start to her shot put career, improving from the 31-5 from the March 18 Sierra Foothill League meet to a 33-6 on Saturday. This sets a St. Francis benchmark for freshies, surpassing Kayla O'Brine's old 2011 standard by 10 inches. In the opposite ring, Emmy Cheatham improved her best discus mark by more than seven feet to an 80-9, good for the win there.
Celeste Ramos scored two JV event victories, leading all-SF fields in each of the 1,600 (5:37.09) and 3,200 (12:56.43). The Troubies also had the only runners in the two JV hurdles, with Grace Zylstra (22.34) and Violet Panton (1:04.25) winning the 100 and 300, respectively. Olivia Santos matched her PR of 7-0 in the pole vault to claim that win, besting Newman's Alina Kilstrom in the tiebreaker. Giuliana Allen took down the 800 at 2:42.74, topping a five-runner field.
St. Francis heads into its two-week spring break, with select athletes competing at the Stanford Invitational (April 3-4) and the Arcadia Invitational (Apr. 10-11) during that span. The full Troubie squad returns to action on April 15 for the third SFL center meet, held at Granite Bay.
