SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Seven St. Francis students won a total of 10 All-Sierra Foothill League first-team certificates, as the Sacramento powerhouse prep league announced its year-end awards for spring sports.
The criteria determining All-SFL distinction depends on the sport. In softball and lacrosse, first- and second-team selections are determined by a vote of the coaches. In swimming, diving and track & field, the league champions garner first-team honors while the runner-up in each event makes the second team. Any diver who hits NISCA provisional All-America standards are also named to the first team.
Three Troubadours earned multiple first-team nods. In swimming, junior Lilla Kapinya won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events at the championship, weeks before going on to finish as the state runner-up in the 100 free. In track & field, freshman Alyssa Gutierrez claimed each of the 1,600 and 3,200 events at the league met as a prelude to her two Sac-Joaquin Section titles and fourth-place state finish in the 3,200. Meanwhile, Alexa Randall won both the 200 and 400 at the SFL championships but injury prevented her from competing in the section postseason.
Seniors Jade Abalateo and Keira Miles represented St. Francis on the lacrosse first team, while senior Alexis McFarland was the lone Troubie on softball's top All-SFL squad. Thrower Abigail Carrothers was the lone Troubie freshman to earn first-team All-SFL honors, thanks to her league win in the shot put.
