SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis High midfielder Zahra Smith captured All-America honors as USA Lacrosse rolled out its 2022 year-end high school awards this week.
USA Lacrosse names All-America, All-Academic and the Bob Scott Awards as part of its overall program. Coaches from each geographical area vote for players for the three categories, then the results are submitted to the national organization. All-Americans are "the best players in the United States, while also embodying excellent sportsmanship." The All-Academic recipients exhibit on-field skills and sportsmanship paired with academic achievement. The Jackie Pitts Award goes to the player in each area who "goes 'above and beyond' in service" to her team, school and community.
Smith, who signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the HBCU Delaware State, represents the North Coast/Sac-Joaquin area. She earned Delta League Player of the Year honors in her final season, having set school records for single-season goals (58) and caused turnovers (49). Smith led the Troubadours to a 14-6 overall record and a share of the Delta League title under the tutelage of head coach Julia Southard. St. Francis also enjoyed its highest section playoff seed (No. 10) since 2013, and posted its first wins over area powerhouses Davis and Granite Bay in almost a decade.
