Captains assume unusual roles in 14-0 shutout of Roseville

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - Senior co-captains Johanna Stevenson and Zahra Smith each achieved the unusual feat of posting at least one goal and save in the same game as St. Francis blanked Roseville, 14-0, in Delta League girls' lacrosse action at Mather Sports Complex Friday night.

The Troubadours improve to 6-1 for the year and remain unbeaten in conference play at 4-0.

Normally midfielders, Stevenson and Smith volunteered to cover the goalkeeper position in place of fellow senior and regular starter Bella McCullough, who is in Mexico to try out for that country's national team.

Stevenson handled goaltending duties in the first half, stopping the only shot she faced. Stevenson then scored a goal exactly 10 minutes into the second frame. Meanwhile, Smith scored two goals with an assist and six draw controls in the first half, before totaling two saves – including one on an eight-meter chance in the 46th minute – during her second-half stint in the goalie circle.

Senior Claire Westberg led all players with a hat trick, plus she matched Camdyn Zucker with a team-high of four ground balls. Brynley Hodge and Abby Alvernaz netted two goals apiece. Freshman Zia Smith, the junior varsity team's leading scorer, earned a call-up to the varsity squad for the night and responded with a goal and three draw controls.

The Troubies scored three goals within the first 2:35 of the game, a span that also included a pair of crease violations that disqualified additional shots into the Tiger net. Back-to-back scores by Alvernaz extended the margin to 5-0 by the fifth minute.

Meanwhile, Roseville did not breach their attacking third until the 13th minute, and managed their lone first-half shot in the 15th, which Stevenson blocked.

Westberg netted all three of her goals after the 8-0 halftime break. She converted two to start the half, invoking the running-clock rule, then completed her hat trick on a drive through the fan with one minute left in the contest.

Only the SFHS varsity team played Friday night, as Roseville does not have a junior varsity squad. Friday's win starts a six-game homestand, which continues on Wednesday against Oak Ridge.
