FAIR OAKS, Calif. – Sophomore Brynley Hodge scored a team-high five goals while senior Zahra Smith added four goals and an assist, leading St. Francis to a 17-0 shutout of Bella Vista in Delta League varsity girls' lacrosse action Wednesday night.
The Troubadours improve to 13-3 for the year and 10-1 in league play. The JV game was canceled earlier in April.
Hodge's scoring output raised her season total to 51 goals, making her just the fifth player in program history to surpass the half-century mark. She also surpassed Sarah Westover for the most goals in a season by a sophomore. For that matter, Smith now has 45 goals for the year, putting her in a tie for ninth (with Westover) in the Troubie record book.
Seniors Abby Alvernaz and Lauren Wieser each poured in two goals, while Lauren Baleria, Elizabeth Barger, Johanna Stevenson and May Conlin also scored one apiece. Freshman Karly Okamoto led the way with four assists, while Wieser also had two dimes.
Smith had an overall complete game on the "hustle stats" as well, totaling eight draw controls, four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Okamoto won another five draws, as St. Francis controlled 17 of the 19 center starts for the contest.
Wednesday's win also marked the third shutout of the year for senior Bella McCullough. The William Penn-bound goalkeeper only faced one shot on goal, but that one save raises her total to 86 and puts her alone in seventh place for the school's single-season leaderboard.
St. Francis wraps up Delta League play with a doubleheader at Rio Americano on Friday. The varsity will play the first game at 4 p.m. with the jayvees following at 5:30.
