SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Bella McCullough, a senior goalkeeper for the St. Francis High lacrosse team, was announced as the school's winner for the Heisman High School Scholarship presented by Acceptance Insurance on Monday.
The William Penn-bound senior now advances to the ballot for the state winners, which will be announced on Tuesday. The national finalists from the six regions are then revealed on Monday, November 8. State winners earn a $1,000 scholarship, while the national finalists receive a $2,000 award. The two national winners – one male and one female – are granted a $10,000 scholarship.
McCullough serves as president for the school's Sports Media Club and Jazz Club, while also holding a seat as Student Government Senator. She also has more than 100 hours of volunteer work as an English tutor for kids of grades K-4th. On the field, McCullough posted 104 saves as a junior last spring, and put herself at No. 2 in the Troubies' record book for season save percentage (.523).
The Heisman High School Scholarship is presented by Acceptance Insurance and governed by the same Heisman Trophy Trust that recognizes the outstanding college football player in the country. The program honors "the nation's most accomplished, community-minded high school senior athletes."
