EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. – Guard Lilian Vicio drained four three-pointers en route to a team-leading 18 points while post Perpetua Nwaukoni grabbed 14 rebounds to earn her team's Hard Hat Award, as St. Francis' junior varsity Red team dominated River Valley, 48-24, to capture the Trojan Toss-Up frosh tournament title at Oak Ridge High Thursday afternoon.
The Troubadours improve to 7-1 for the year, having won six consecutive games.
Nwaukoni, who joined the JV Red squad at the start of the winter break, also scored six points. The Hard Hat Award, chosen by head coach John Bashore, is bestowed upon the player with the most hustle: stats like rebounds, steals and blocks play a significant part in the selection process.
Aubrey O'Donnell, on loan from St. Francis' JV Gold squad, blocked seven shots while adding 10 rebounds and four steals of her own. The JV Red team had only six of its regular players available, with several members away during the break, requiring a freshman to come over from the Gold.
Point guard Karly Okamoto added 10 points, including four transition buckets in the first quarter alone. She also dished out eight assists and recorded five steals. The Troubies held a 22-1 lead through the opening frame, and did not allow a field goal until the 3:53 mark of the second quarter. They led 30-9 at halftime and 44-17 after the third.
Alexis Heise added 12 points with five reobounds.
Both St. Francis jayvee teams return to action at the Rocklin Winter Tourney from December 28-30. The all-freshman Red crew opens with Woodcreek at 10:30 a.m. that morning, while the Gold squad faces Oak Ridge at 6 p.m. that night.
