Kapinya breaks school record at CIF state championships

FRESNO, Calif. – Sophomore Lilla Kapinya swam the 50-yard freestyle in 23.40 seconds, breaking Ava Chavez' two-year-old school record and finishing 11th overall while senior Erica Jaffe won the 100 backstroke consolation final, leading St. Francis at the CIF State Swimming & Diving championships, held at the Clovis Olympic Aquatics Center Saturday.

Kapinya tied Monte Vista's Addy VonderAhe for second in the consols, securing 7.5 points for the Troubadours. Chavez, now a sophomore swimmer at Cal, previously established a mark of 23.50 at the same meet two years prior. Kapinya swam a 23.54 during Friday's prelims to nab the 18th and final spot in that 'B' final, cutting more than a quarter of a second from her time of 23.82 at the Sac-Joaquin Section championships.

Jaffe followed with a 55.76 in the 100 back, beating South Torrance's Kayla Thompson (56.14) by more than a third of a second for 10th place and 10 team points.

Jaffe, Kapinya and seniors Isabelle Schmid and Mia Hill went on to conclude St. Francis' season with a 12th-place 3:30.32 in the 400 freestyle relay, improving on their prelim time by .08 and their SJS finals mark by .23.

The 400 free relay raised the Troubies' point total to 31.5, good for 27th place in the meet. Four members of the SF senior class committed to swim at the collegiate ranks: Jaffe at UCLA, Hill at St. Bonaventure, Marissa Recio at Fresno State and Schmid at Cal Poly, although the Mustangs discontinued their program last spring.

All three times eclipsed the "Consideration" standard for NISCA All-America status

The 2025 state championships also concluded the first season under the tutelage of head coach Michael Solander, who also guided Jesuit High to ninth-place total of 94 points.
