Troubies win third straight Sac-Joaquin Section swim and dive title

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Senior and UCLA commit Erica Jaffe won the 100-yard backstroke and led off two other state-qualifying relay squads, helping St. Francis win its third straight Division II title on the final day of the Sac-Joaquin Section swimming championships, held at Elk Grove Aquatics Center Friday.

The Troubadours totaled 241 points, second only to Davis, but tops among the meet's D-II entrants. They outscored fellow Sierra Foothill League members Del Oro (224) and Granite Bay (206) to nab the banner. This is St. Francis' eighth overall section championship overall, along with 1995, 1997, 1998, 2010, 2011, 2023 and 2024.

Jaffe swam the backstroke portion of the Troubies' third-place 200 medley relay, joining Landen Didriksen, Marissa Recio and Lilla Kapinya for a time of one minute, 47.93 seconds. She followed with a winning 55.93 in the 100 back, besting the field by more than a full second. Vista Del Lago's Jessica Johnson took a relatively distant second at 57.23.

Jaffe finished her meet with the leadoff leg of the 400 free relay, joining Isabelle Schmid, Mia Hill and Kapinya for a 3:30.55. This edged Davis by less than a second (3:31.37), switching places in the standings from Wednesday's preliminary finishes. Jaffe also placed fourth in the 200 individual medley at 2:06.02.

The top three finishers in each varsity event advance to the CIF state meet in Fresno next week.

The 200 IM and 100 back were St. Francis' highest-scoring varsity individual races, with three swimmers contributing to the scoring in each. Besides Jaffe, Hill (2:07.84) and Recio (2:08.70) were the first two to touch the final pad in the consolation final, good for ninth- and 10th-place points. Then in the 100 back, senior Lexie DeAngelis capped her career by breaking the one-minute barrier with a seventh-place 59.69. Schmid preceded the race by winning the consols at 59.94.

Recio represented another championship finalist for St. Francis in Friday's session, placing fifth in the 500 free with 5:09.75. The squad of Hill, DeAngelis, Schmid and Recio also scored seventh-place points in the 200 free relay at 1:38.63.

One extra boost in the team scoring came from Hill and Didriksen in the 100 breaststroke. Although they sneaked into a second swim by nabbing the final two spots in the consols, they improved to 12th (1:07.92) and 13th (1:08.06), respectively – three places better, with the extra points to go with it.

Meanwhile, St. Francis captured a second-place plaque in the frosh-soph competition, scoring 208 points, just one behind overall winner Granite Bay's 209. Freshman Madeline Kann placed fourth in both sprint frees, going 25.22 in the 50 and 56.66 in the 100, plus she anchored both free relays. Lillian Damrell finished once spot ahead of Kann in the 100 free with a 56.06 for the Troubie frosh-soph's best individual swimming finish. Diver Rose Buffleben contributed the most points, however, thanks to her runner-up finish in 1-meter diving on Monday at St. Mary's.

The younger SF squad capped its day with a championship in the 400 free relay. Riley Wood, Lena Moggan, Damrell and Kann compiled a winning 3:44.25 in the girls' finale, edging GB at the end by 1.41 seconds. That same foursome also went 1:41.96 for third place in the 200 free relay midway through the session.

The varsity 200 medley relay, 400 free relay and Jaffe (100 back) will move on to the state championships at the Clovis West Aquatics Complex. Senior Paige Vicente qualified for the Troubies in the diving portion, which takes place on Thursday. The swim trials and finals then follow on May 16 and 17, respectively.
