MATHER, Calif. – Senior midfielder Jade Abalateo tied her career high of five goals while fellow senior middie Keira Miles added a hat trick, as St. Francis held off a fourth-quarter surge to claim a 9-6 win over Davis in the varsity nightcap of Friday's Sierra Foothill League girls' lacrosse doubleheader at Mather Sports Complex.
The Troubadours improve to 5-1 overall, 4-1 in league games. The Blue Devils drop to 3-4 for the year, with a 3-2 SFL record. The varsity win followed a 6-0 shutout for St. Francis junior varsity in the opener.
Abalateo completed her hat trick with 2:28 left before halftime, then finished a pair of eight-meter chances in the third quarter for five goals, matching the total from the Troubies' February 25 season opener at West Park.
Miles' three goals resulted in her 24th consecutive hat trick, a streak that dates back to April of her sophomore year. It also raised her career total to 166, moving her ahead of former teammate Brynley Hodge as the unofficial program leader as recorded on MaxPreps. (Note: the actual record is unknown, as MaxPreps does not list stats for the 2013, 2020 and 2021 seasons.)
Miles also led the way with four draw controls, with Abalateo and Skye Smith each tallying three. Freshman Gilliam Hamm had the remaining goal, redirecting a Lizzie David pass to extend the Troubie lead to 7-2 with 9:41 left in the third.
St. Francis led 2-0 through the first quarter and held a 5-2 lead at halftime. Miles' third goal, the Hamm quick stick and the two eight-meter strikes for Abalateo extended the margin to 9-3 entering the fourth.
Davis senior Olivia Ayson, who put her team on the board with two eight-meter goals in the second, found the back of the net three times in the fourth. She scored on a crease roll at the 10:34 mark, converted Izzy Churchward's assist with 3:08 left, then converted another eight-meter with 46 ticks remaining to trim the Blue Devil deficit to its final of 9-6.
Earlier in the evening, sophomore Hannah Chitiea scored twice from the eight-meter arc, while Elena Petrakis, Bonnie Cohen, Sadie Tilney and Millie Katzeff each chipped in a goal as the Troubie jayvees blanked Davis, 6-0. Goalkeepers Lillian Taylor and Claire Gabri split halves in the goal circle for the combined shutout. Cohen and Katzeff had steals totals of five and three, respectively, with that duo plus Yemaya Smith-Mason each picking up four ground balls.
Friday represented the second shutout win by the JV squad, along with the 4-0 win against Whitney four days earlier.
St. Francis returns to action for a road doubleheader against Del Oro. This game has been relocated to Sierra College's Homer "Buzz" Ostrom Stadium due to maintenance at Golden Eagles Stadium for the next month. Game times also moved back slightly to 5:45 (JV) and 7:30 p.m. (varsity) due to field availability.
