Lacrosse storms past Thunder in SFL opener

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Senior midfielder Keira Miles scored a game-high five goals, senior Jade Abalateo and freshman Gillian Hamm added hat tricks while sophomore Skye Smith finished with five total points and a team-leading five caused turnovers as St. Francis rolled past Rocklin, 16-3, in the varsity nightcap of a Sierra Foothill League girls' lacrosse doubleheader Tuesday night.

The Troubadours improve to 2-0 for the year and open league play at 1-0. The Thunder remains winless at 0-2 with an 0-1 mark in SFL contests.

Miles completed her hat trick within the first nine minutes of the game, then tacked on two more scores during a one-minute, 4-0 St. Francis outburst in the third quarter. The Denver commit also grabbed five of her team's 14 draw controls for the game.

Smith tallied two goals and three assists on offense to go with her five steals, three ground balls and two DCs. Lizzie David matched Smith's brace in the scoring column, with freshman Bridget Beard accounting for the remaining goal. Freshman Britten Sires amassed four saves, including one against junior Cameron Garcia on an eight-meter chance.

St. Francis scored five straight goals to start the game, and held a 7-2 edge at the halftime break. Abalateo opened the third quarter with a crease roll to make it 8-2, then four Troubie goals connected within a span of 60 seconds midway through the third to boost the margin to the all-important 10. Miles scored on a drive with 7:22 to go, Smith assisted Beard 21 seconds later, Hamm's successful draw control set up Miles' fifth overall goal at 6:48, then Abalateo won the next drive to give way to David's first score with 6:22 on the clock.

The Troubies slowed down the offense in the fourth after Abalateo made it 14-3 with her drive through the arc to start the frame. Smith had three interceptions down the stretch, one of which led directly to David's second goal with 2:37 remaining. Senior Mia Nelson also chipped in a steal in the midfield to further keep Rocklin off the board.

The varsity win followed a heartbreaking 4-3 loss for St. Francis junior varsity. Elena Petrakis scored her second goal on a steal from the Thunder goalkeeper with just 32 seconds remaining to tie the contest at 3-3, only for Rocklin sophomore Sophia Leigh Artus to scoop up a ground ball in the midfield and dash to the SF cage for the game-winner with just two ticks left.

After a scoreless first quarter, sophomore Hannah Chitiea put the Troubies on the board to finish a long transition with 6:57 in the second. Rocklin equalized when Kinley Cambron assisted Morgan Duffy with 4:14 left in the half, but Petrakis boosted SF to a 2-1 lead on a counterattack goal with 2:21 remaining before the break. Cambron and Artus each converted trips to the eight-meter arc in the third frame to give the Thunder a 3-2 lead, a score that held until the last-minute fireworks by each team.

St. Francis continues SFL play in its home opener on Thursday, taking on Folsom. JV begins at 5:30 p.m. with varsity following at 7:15 p.m. at Mather Sports Complex.
