Miles scores career high as LAX continues strong start

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior midfielder Keira Miles netted a career-high eight goals while sophomore Skye Smith and freshman Gillian Hamm also recorded hat tricks, as St. Francis crafted an 18-8 win over Folsom in the varsity nightcap of a Sierra Foothill League girls' lacrosse doubleheader at Mather Sports Complex Thursday night.

The Troubadours, playing in their home opener, improve to 3-0 overall with a 2-0 league record. The Bulldogs drop their third straight game, slipping to 1-3 overall.

Miles, a fall signee to the powerhouse University of Denver program, previously enjoyed seven-goal games against Folsom (Mar. 6), Davis (Apr. 15) and Bella Vista (Apr. 29), all during her junior year. She also led SF with four draw controls while adding an assist to Hamm late in the fourth quarter.

Senior Jade Abalateo and freshman Bridget Beard each finished with two goals. Hamm, who led all Troubies with two assists, scored her first goal of the game in somewhat unusual fashion. She collected a pass from Lizzie David at the X and sent it home with 32 seconds left before halftime. Hamm was initially called for a yellow card for the shot, but the officials convened and overturned the card. That goal boosted the score to 11-5 going into the break.

Miles completed her hat trick by the end of the first quarter, at which St. Francis held a 6-0 lead. That margin diminished to 8-5 after Folsom freshman Lauren Anderson converted three eight-meter chances within a span of 2:23 in the middle of the second. Troubie freshman Britten Sires then halted a Nora Friedrich shot to deflate the Bulldog momentum. Hamm assisted Beard for a goal with 2:48 to go, Smith completed her second eight-meter goal of the quarter, then Hamm made it a six-goal margin after her yellow card was overturned.

Miles scored both SF goals in the third, then popped three more tallies in the fourth to finish the game with her new personal best. Hamm turned feeds from Smith and Miles to complete her hat trick, which also invoked the running clock for the final 4:49 of play.

Hamm also led the Troubies with four ground balls, and matched junior defender Natalia Zitelli with two caused turnovers.

The varsity win followed a 5-1 setback for St. Francis' junior varsity squad. Sophomore Hannah Chitiea scored on a drive less than a minute into the fourth quarter to put the Troubies on the board, but Folsom had found the back of the net twice in each of the first and third frames to build a 4-0 lead.

Sophomore Maura McManus highlighted the SF jayvees with three ground balls and two steals, freshman Rose Leahy scooped up a team-best four GBs, while goalkeepers Claire Gabri and Lillian Taylor posted save totals of five and three, respectively.

St. Francis lacrosse season returns to action on Monday for an SFL home doubleheader against Whitney. JV starts at 5:30, with the varsity first draw scheduled for 7:15 p.m. at Mather SC's North field.
