More personal records fall at Sacramento MOC

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman Halle Welch and sophomores Jasleen Gandhoke, Alexa Randall and Sunny Schranz each hit sizable personal records to highlight St. Francis action at the Sacramento Meet of Champions, hosted by Bella Vista High at American River College Saturday. The MOC consists of two tiers of competition: an Open session in the morning and early afternoon, followed by the Invitational portion in the evening.

Gandhoke competed in both sessions, running both hurdles races in the Open half then placing fifth with a 5-foot-2 mark in the Invitational high jump to start the evening portion. She finished third in the 300 hurdles at 47.33, bumping Marie Brothers' 40-year-old mark of 47.74 for the No. 10 slot in the school record book. This also represents the fastest in the event since Grace Heisinger ran a 46.49 in the 2022 "Holy Spikes" dual with Christian Brothers.

Earlier in the meet, Gandhoke came just shy of a PR in the 100 hurdles, placing second with a time of 15.62 seconds. This is the fastest wind-legal time of her career, behind only the PR 15.44 at last year's Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I meet. It also served as the highest Troubadour finish in any event at Saturday's meet.

Randall slashed a half second from her old 400-meter PR, placing second in the second heat and ninth overall with a 58.47 time. She previously went 58.97 at the third Sierra Foothill League center meet on April 9, which in turn marked an 0.51 improvement from the 59.44 she set at the 2024 edition of the MOC. Randall now ranks eighth in school history in the quarter, just ahead of Izzy Fauria's 58.57 from the 2019 dual against Sheldon. It also stands as the fastest 400 by an Troubie since Ariane Arndt set the school record of 54.87 at the 2016 section meet.

Then in the evening Invitational session, Welch and Schranz hit personal bests in the 1,600 and 3,200, respectively. Schranz crossed the finish line in 11:19.52, erasing her previous best of 11:25.38 from the 2024 MOC. Welch hacked exactly three seconds off from her previous 1,600-meter best, running a 5:05.10 for 16th place in the 1,600. This is now the No. 2 best time for a Troubie freshman, trailing only Cate Joaquin's 4:58.62 at the 2019 Stanford Invitational.

Welch also achieved an impressive double, following her 1,600 PR by joining Schranz in the 3,200 less than two hours later. She posted an 11:22.07, well shy of her best of 11:06.07 from the Dublin Distance Fiesta one month prior, but still a threshold that only five SF freshmen have reached in school history.

The Troubies now enter the championship portion of the 2025 schedule, starting with the Sierra Foothill League championships on Wednesday and Saturday. Wednesday's session consists mostly of frosh-soph competition, while Saturday has exclusively varsity events. Both meets take place at Granite Bay High.
