MODESTO, Calif. – Junior forward Norah White netted the first goal of the contest in the sixth minute, but a penalty kick midway through the first half and the go-ahead goal in the sixth minute of extra time resulted in eighth-seeded St. Francis falling to top-seeded Gregori, 2-1, in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division I girls' soccer quarterfinal at Don Lanphear Stadium Monday night.
The Troubadours end their season at 15-6-4. The Jaguars remain undefeated at 21-0-1, and will face No. 5-seeded West Park in the semifinal round.
St. Francis controlled possession for most of the early portion of the game, resulting in White's first strike. The junior Fresno State commit nearly scored a minute earlier on a well-placed cross from Azaria Agbodike, but this time collected a pass from Trinity Ito about 20 yards above the Gregori penalty box. White advanced toward the left side of the box before firing cross-cage to the right side of frame for the goal.
The Troubie lead lasted until the 20th minute, when freshman Mila Apodaca drew a foul high in the SF penalty box. Kylie Farmer went to the marker and converted the set play for her 16th goal of the year, tying the game at 1-1.
That score held up throughout the entire second half, although not without chances to break the tie. Farmer had a shot glance off the crossbar late in the first half, then she managed three more attempts that missed their marks. Junior Rachel Warter also put a forehead on each of a free kick and a corner kick in the final minutes of regulation, with each missing just left of the post.
Meanwhile, Tallas Schaedler gave SF two significant chances on either side of the field. She made a long run down the right sideline that resulted in a cross into the box, but neither trailing Troubie could get a piece of it for a shot. Schaedler did it again in the 79th, collecting a pass from Lily Hall then advancing half the field before turning inward. She centered the ball to Brynn Baker, who attempted to redirect the ball into the cage–only for Jaguar keeper Jocelyn Malagon and defender Mia Garcia to intercede.
The ever-dangerous Miley Blough also had key challenges in the second half. Her cross into the box came inches from Agbodike for a header in the goal box, while her free kick in the 80th required a lunging save from finding the right side of the net.
Instead, the contest went to overtime, which saw Gregori dominate possession to start. The Jags fired three shots in the first three minutes, including one on goal, before Grace Rodriguez outraced the SF defense along the right side. Gregori's leading scorer with 35 goals, Rodriguez instead centered the ball to an open Apodaca in the center of the box. The Jaguar ninth grader fired top shelf for the go-ahead.
Gregori held St. Francis to just a single shot on frame the rest of the way to finish its 16th consecutive win.
White's goal marked her third of the year, although in just 11 games. She finishes tied for fourth on the team with Agbodike and Marissa Ow. Blough finished her career with 29 varsity goals, including 16 as a senior.
