Troubies, Wildcats play to 1-1 draw in SFL showdown

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Senior Miley Blough converted an outlet pass from junior Lily Hall in the 32nd minute to erase an early deficit, then the Troubadour defense locked down the cage in the second half, as St. Francis and Whitney played to a 1-1 draw in the varsity portion of a Sierra Foothill League girls' soccer tripleheader Thursday night.

This is the fourth tie of the year for the Troubadours, now 11-4-4 overall with a 4-3-4 league mark. The Wildcats have seen even more impasses this season, remaining undefeated with a 5-0-9 season mark and a 3-0-8 ledger in SFL play. Furthermore, Whitney had only allowed two goals in its 13 previous games entering Thursday's matchup—appropriately enough, in a 2-2 draw with Del Oro.

The Wildcats controlled possession in the early going, getting on the board first on a successful corner kick in the 10th minute. SF goalkeeper Millie Katzeff went to the ground for a save on the first touch, but her compromised position allowed for an easy follow into the right side of the cage.

St. Francis managed its first threat in the 17th, with Azaria Agbodike crossing to Mia Nelson in the box. Wildcat keeper Addison Parsons knocked the pass away from the goal to the feet of Nelson, but another Whitney defender also steered the ball free for a corner kick. This event began a flurry of chances for the Troubadours, with the closest coming from Elizabeth McNearney, called up from JV Gold for the day to help fill the void of two missing defenders who were absent due to a school function. The sophomore put her blast on frame, with Parsons getting enough glove on the ball to bat it off the crossbar.

The Troubies finally equalized with 8:52 remaining in the half, when Hall rolled a brisk pass down the right hashmarks of the football field to Blough. Blough then veered left before firing cross-cage into the net for her 10th goal of the year, surpassing her junior-season total.

Coincidentally, Hall and Blough will be future collegiate opponents: Blough committed to Fresno State earlier in January, while the 11th-grade Hall announced her intent to play for San Diego State. Both teams are members of the Mountain West Conference.

St. Francis' defense, though missing two regular starters, protected its goal throughout the second half. McNearney, Trinity Ito, Madeline Squaglia and Tallas Schaedler made play after play in holding the Wildcats to just a single shot on goal, with Schaedler blocking two other attempts in the opening minutes before clearing out a potential counterattack in the 62nd.

Ito appeared to have assisted the game-winning goal in the 78th minute when she sent a pass across the penalty box to Monet Zauner, who struck a shot into the high left corner of the net with 2:06 remaining in regulation. Unfortunately for SF, the goal was disqualified due to an offsides call—even though Zauner was on the 3-yard line of the football and the lowest Whitney defender was still in the end zone at the time Ito served the ball.

Besides the varsity draw, the two St. Francis junior varsity squads experienced opposite ends of the spectrum. Gold erased an early 2-0 deficit with goals from Bridget Beard and Mariko Palmieri in the 18th and 56th minutes, respectively. SF keeper Alyssa Becze made a save against Whitney sophomore Brooklyn Maday in the 79th for what appeared to clinch a 2-2 tie. However, despite time having expired for more than a full minute, sophomore Julia Ralls fired in a long free kick from the right side to lift the Wildcats to a 3-2 win. The contest was then whistled after the set play concluded.

Still, offsetting the heartbreaking finishes in the JV Gold and varsity games, JV Red posted its first SFL win of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Whitney frosh-soph. Livi Daugherty and Victoria Tateishi scored the two goals in similar fashion, converting passes from Anna Votaw and Keira Jennings, respectively. Jennings' pass managed to elude multiple Wildcats to find Tateishi at the top of the box in the 37th minute.

Impressively, Red won its game despite a first-time goalkeeper, as Celeste Ramos donned the keeper kit in place of injured starter Jaycee Martinez. While Ramos did come up with two saves, the Troubie defense came up strong in support of Ramos by holding its hosts to just three total shots, with just the two on goal.

The three SF squads split up for the weekend, with JV Red hosting West Park on Friday at 5 p.m. Then on Saturday, JV Gold (noon) and varsity (2 p.m.) hosts Christian Brothers for the "Holy Cup" rivalry doubleheader between the area's largest Catholic girls' programs. All three games take place at Cristo Rey's Adamson Family Sports Complex.
