WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Four different Troubadours scored goals in a 4-0 win over Ponderosa in the varsity championship game while sophomore Anna George posted a goal and an assist in JV Gold's 2-0 victory against Rio Americano in the junior varsity finale, as St. Francis claimed both titles at River City High's Raider Cup Classic girls' soccer tournament Saturday.
The Troubie varsity improves to 6-1 for the year. JV Gold moves to 5-1-1 upon scoring its third straight championship at this tournament.
Senior Holland Sperber, sophomore Azaria Agbodike, senior Miley Blough and senior Evelyn McNearney netted the goals, in respective order, in the shutout over Pondo. It also marked the second goal of the day for Blough, Agbodike and McNearney, as each altered the scoreboard in a 3-0 win over Bella Vista to wrap up pool play in Saturday morning's action.
St. Francis came out firing in the championship game, with Blough and Tallas Schaedler narrowly missing on shots within the first 48 seconds of play. Sperber put the Troubies on the board in just the fourth minute. The Bruin goalkeeper played a ball toward the middle about 25 yards out, then the Houston Christian commit intercepted the pass and returned it to the cage. SF then doubled its lead, with Mia Nelson sending a pass to Agbodike for a successful bomb in the 10th minute.
Blough's goal came after a flurry of shots in the 13th and 14th minutes. She had her initial shot saves, then Agbodike's second- chance was blocked over the endline. This sent the future Nevada Wolf Pack player to the corner. Blough and junior Lacey Harmon exchanged passes along that flank, with Blough firing in the shot for the third Troubie goal at the 20:48 mark, or 15th minute.
St. Francis continued to dominate possession, although Pondo managed to protect its cage until the 57th minute. Junior Lily Hall drove to the right corner then delivered a cross to McNearney in the box, resulting in the Troubies' expanding their lead to 4-0.
The Troubadour varsity squad clinched a spot in the Raider Cup title game by virtue of the maximum 30 tournament points: three wins worth six points. Each win was worth six points, with a bonus point awarded for a clean sheet. Finally, teams earned a point for each goal scored up to three. Thus, St. Francis notched 10 points by blanking Pioneer (4-0), Chico (8-0) and BV (3-0) in its round-robin slate. Meanwhile, Ponderosa reached the championship in exciting fashion: Vacaville had the second-highest point total (26) heading into the 2 p.m. pool play game. The Bruins had a 1-1 tie going against Pioneer, which – had it held up – would have put them in the third-place game. Instead, Pondo scored the game-winner with five seconds left in regulation. This sent them to the title match against the Troubies, and relegated Vacaville to the third-place contest.
St. Francis' Gold squad also earned the top seed for bracket play on the heels of three shutouts: 3-0 against Pioneer and 12-0 over Chico on Friday, then a 5-0 win over Bella Vista on Saturday morning. The Troubies controlled possession for the entirety of the first half, but didn't get on the board until the 13th minute. Freshman Bridget Beard's run along the left side resulted in a corner kick, with George assisting Sloane Street for the game-winner. George then scored a goal of her own on a counterattack initiated from a Mariko Palmieri through ball in the 47th minute.
Beard scored back-to-back goals in Saturday's opener against the Broncos, while also assisting Andrea Silva on the initial tally. George had the fourth goal in that win, then assisted Paityn Lowery for the fifth.
Sophomore Mia Rabinovitz went the distance in front of the cage in both varsity wins for two more shutouts on Saturday. Junior Guinevere O'Brien, who normally platoons in net with sophomore Alyssa Becze, played the full game in the JV title match with Rio for her first shutout of the season.
All three St. Francis soccer teams engaged in tourney action on Saturday, with the JV Red squad in the East Bay for Carondelet's Macaulay Cougar Classic. Red lost to the tourney hosts, 4-0, then fell to San Ramon Valley by a 2-0 final to close out its weekend.
The Troubadours return to action for their Sierra Foothill League opener at Folsom on Tuesday. The Bulldogs come off a season in which they rose as a No. 10 seed to reach the San-Joaquin Section Division I championship game, where they dropped a 1-0 thriller to leaguemate Del Oro. JV Red begins the set at 3:30 p.m., varsity follows at 5:30 p.m., then JV Gold ends the evening with a 7:15 p.m. contest per the league's Tuesday format.
