SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior attacker Holland Sperber scored on a follow-up of a Tallas Schaedler shot in the 54th minute but St. Francis surrendered the equalizer during the first minute of stoppage time, settling for a 1-1 draw against Del Oro in the varsity portion of a Sierra Foothill League girls' soccer tripleheader at Adamson Family Sports Complex Thursday night.
The Troubadours move to 8-3-1 for the season with a 2-2-1 league record. The Golden Eagles are now 2-0-3, both overall and in SFL play.
The varsity impasse followed a 3-2 victory for St. Francis' JV Gold, clinched on a Hazel Pryor corner kick in the final seconds; and a 1-1 tie for JV Gold, during which Victoria Tateishi finished a goal in the 27th minute to erase an initial deficit.
The Troubadour varsity held a slight 9-8 shooting advantage in the first half, although only Sperber and sophomore Azaria Agbodike had attempts on goal. That margin increased to 15-8 in the second half, with SF cracking the seal on the goal with 26:40 left in the game. Schaedler launched a high blast that reserve goalkeeper Brekyn Davenport-Murrish halted with a leaping save. However, Sperber followed with the putback and the game's first goal.
That lead held up until the 80th minute, when Del Oro drew a foul about 40 yards out along the left side. Starting keeper Rowan Wilson, who returned to the goal box in the 62nd minute, handled the kick after the regular 40-minute clock had expired. In similar fashion to the Troubie goal, sophomore Sofia Rabinovitz blocked Wilson's initial serve, only to have junior Maycee Kirby tap in the putback for the tying tally.
Senior Miley Blough managed her team-high seventh shot in the hope to regain the lead, but Wilson made the save. Marissa Ow fired the second-chance look, but it sailed high. Meanwhile, Kirby fired one last shot for DO that ran into traffic in the final seconds.
JV Gold won the opener in a rollercoaster ride, yielding the game's first goal in the ninth minute, scoring twice later in the first half to hold a 2-1 halftime lead, giving up a second Golden Eagle score in the 66th, then snatching the win in the final seconds.
DO junior Jada Geertsen assisted her team's initial goal and scored the putback on her own attempt in the 66th. St. Francis got on the board with 11:40 left in the first half, or the 29th minute of the game, when Bridget Beard advanced up the left side of the field, turned in to elude two Golden Eagle defenders, then planted her shot. Beard then had a similar run in the 36th but instead assisted Cali Chambers for the initial go-ahead in the 36th.
Sophia Kennedy-Contreras fired eight shots after the break, including one that glanced off the left post in the 47th. Instead, she had the assist on the game-winner: after Del Oro's Kate Baker nearly scored an own goal in the 80th minute, Kennedy-Contreras went to handle the corner kick. Her serve traveled across the cage to the right post, where Pryor was positioned for the successful header.
Pryor's goal also secured the win for goalkeeper Alyssa Becze, who finished with eight saves as an encore to the dozen stops she posted against Whitney two nights earlier.
Finally, JV Red also battled Del Oro to a 1-1 draw in the nightcap. The Troubies gave up a goal just 2:44 into the contest on a deep ball that eluded goalkeeper Jaycee Martinez, who came up with eight saves for the rest of the game. In the 27th minute, newcomer Gabrielle Angove sent a pass to Anna Votaw, who got tripped up just outside the penalty box. No foul was called against the DO defender, with Tateishi taking over the ball from a fallen Votaw for the go-ahead.
Despite an evenly matched second half, neither team found the back of the net for the remainder in forging the final tie.
Thursday's action concluded a six-day, three-game homestand for the Troubadour soccer program. JV Red returns to action on Friday in a non-league road game at West Park, then all three teams head to Oak Ridge for more SFL play on Tuesday.
