Troubie jayvees open strong in Manteca

MANTECA, Calif. - Freshman Giuliana Del Guerra scored a total of six goals to lift the St. Francis High junior varsity Red squad to wins of 6-0 over Edison and 10-0 over host Manteca on the first day of the 13th Varsity Buff Cup soccer tournament Friday. Del Guerra netted two goals with an assist in the win over the Tigers, then followed with a 4-for-5 performance in the nightcap over the Buffs.

Despite the tournament name, only the two SFHS JV teams made the trip. The Troubies' varsity team was originally scheduled to host Vista Del Lago, but that game was canceled.

Del Guerra, a forward from Sacramento, hit two of St. Francis' five first-half against Edison. Sofia Rabinovitz tallied a goal and an assist (to Del Guerra), with Abby Clark, Alina Gutierrez and Jada Dwyer also finding the back of the net against the Tigers. Rabinovitz and Angelina Chavez then added two scores as part of the 10-0 outburst against the host Buffs. Ruby Ellis and Alyssa Cheah each chipped in a goal, while Clark, Rabinovitz, Chavez and Kate Lewis picked up assists.

Chavez also split time with Maggie Buffleben at goalkeeper against Edison, while Buffleben went the distance versus Manteca.

The Troubadours' JV Gold squad also came away victorious on the first day of the tourney, securing a 5-2 win over Central Valley. Yasmine Azar tallied a hat trick while Becca Weil netting two goals for the second time in as many games this year. Weil, Jianna Reyes, Caitlin Hafenstein and Yasmine Azar earned assists in the victory.

The Buff Cup tourney continues through Saturday.
