FOLSOM, Calif. – Freshman Hassanah Ramsey-Gilbert shot 4 of 7 from the field while leading her team in assists, rebounds and blocked shots, but St. Francis trailed from wire to wire in a 72-45 loss at Folsom in the varsity nightcap of a Sierra Foothill League girls' basketball doubleheader Tuesday night.
The Troubadours slip to 10-15 for the year with a 4-9 league record heading into the regular-season finale. The Bulldogs improve to 19-5 overall and remain in second place in the SFL standings at 11-2.
Ramsey-Gilbert, who also sank a three-pointer in the final minutes of the contest, shot 9-for-12 from the free-throw line, with the charity stripe accounting for all of her scoring in the first period. She then poured in a pair of buckets within a span of 48 ticks in the second frame, and had SF's final two field goals in the fourth.
No other Troubie player managed double digits in scoring, although freshman Elise Vipond dropped a pair of three-point bombs en route to eight points. Seniors Lexi London and Colleen Medina also made two field goals each en route to seven and four tallies, respectively. Vipond, London and junior Audrey Bashore each finished 2-for-2 at the line, where SF enjoyed a bright spot of 15-for-18 overall.
Ramsey-Gilbert's early success at the free-throw line plus a Medina steal and pull-up shot helped pull the Troubies from a 9-2 hole to just an 11-9 deficit. However, Folsom freshman Jayden Hill assisted sophomore Lily Reed to close out the first frame, then Hill sank a pair of treys within a span of a minute early in the second. Overall, the Bulldogs enjoyed a 15-2 run from Reed's make at the end of the first to Mallory Goldsby's hook with 4:09 in the second.
Bashore stopped the bleeding with a mid-range jumper at 3:50 with Ramsey-Gilbert following soon after with a defensive rebound turned fast-break score, closing the gap somewhat to a 28-15 margin. But Folsom point guard Racquel Mauch answered with a corner three to help her team craft a 35-17 halftime lead.
St. Francis managed to pull slightly closer when Vipond scored five straight: two at the line after drawing contact on a fast break, then three more then Ramsey-Gilbert found her open in the right corner. That brought the Troubies to within a 14-point gap of 37-23, but that proved to be the closest margin for the remainder of the game. London and Vipond each struck from long range early in the fourth period, and Ramsey-Gilbert exploded for seven total points in the final two minutes, but Folsom held a comfortable lead of more than 20 points throughout.
The varsity setback followed losses for both St. Francis junior varsity squads in two different cities. JV Gold lost by a 66-39 final despite 20 points from sophomore Emmelyn Cheatham. The Troubies stayed within a single point at 20-19 on a Saihej Sekhon shot with 4:51 to go, then Cheatham went coast to coast less than a minute later to keep SF within one possession at 23-21.
Folsom managed two quick scores from Kailey Enright to end the half with a 30-22 advantage, then outscored SF by a 23-4 margin in the third period to pull away to a 53-26 lead. By the time Cheatham went on a scoring tear—a pair of three-pointers within 13 seconds of each other, plus another on a Lena Mundhenk assist with 3:11 left in the game—Folsom had already moved ahead by more than 30 points.
Prior to the action in Folsom, St. Francis' JV Red fell to Nevada Union, 50-11, in a non-league matinee back at home. Five Troubies scored field goals in the game: Sadie Favreau's turnaround shot with 2:52 left in the first, Maeva Mahlmann's drive with two minutes remaining in the second, Ella Renzo's bank shot at 2:02 in the third, Lily Jiimenez's three-pointer from the top of the key in the final minute of the third, then Emily Nguyen's score from the right block at 3:37 in the fourth.
All three teams return home to host Davis for the SFL and regular-season finale on Thursday. JV Red and Gold play their final games at 4:30 and 6 p.m., respectively. Then varsity will honor seniors London, Medina and Laila Mendoza prior to the 7:30 tip. The Troubies and Blue Devils are part of a three-way tie for fifth in the league standings, with the contest also holding significance in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoff picture.
