ROCKLIN, Calif. – Freshman guard Sianna Squires scored 17 points, including 10 in the first quarter, but a short-handed St. Francis' junior varsity Gold surrendered 32 in the second half in a 46-40 loss to Oak Ridge in the first round of the Rocklin Winter Tournament Tuesday night.
The Troubadours end their winning streak at six, moving to 7-2 for the year.
Guard Sydney Teoh added another 13 points for St. Francis, which led 19-8 in the first quarter before being held scoreless for the majority of the second frame. Teoh and post Aubrey O'Donnell each scored buckets near the end of the half to keep the Troubies up by a 23-14 margin.
The Trojans finally equalized on a pair of free throws by Ella Cotrell at the 3:11 mark, evening the contest at 27-27. The game stayed even at 29-29 entering the fourth, but Oak Ridge continued to pile up scoring, taking a 34-29 lead on a Jasmine Carranza three-pointer with 6:30 left in the fourth.
Squires banked in a trey at the 2:31 mark to equalize at 38-38, but OR scored eight of the game's final 10 points down the stretch. Cotrell scored on a reverse layup with 1:41 left, assisted Carranza on a mid-range jumper at 0:55, then came up with a rebound and putback in the final seconds to seal the win for the Trojans.
The JV Gold squad is missing several of its regular contributors during the tournament due to holiday plans, fielding a roster of just eight players.
Earlier in Tuesday's session, the St. Francis JV Red team dispatched Woodcreek by a 52-11 final, with freshman Sydney Chow leading the way in points (14), rebounds (8) and steals (5).
The Rocklin Winter Tourney continues through Thursday.
