Troubie LAX season ends in semifinals

LOOMIS, Calif. – Senior Karly Okamoto scored three goals with an assist, while junior Keira Miles paired her own hat trick with grabbing five draw controls, but third-seeded St. Francis surrendered 10 unanswered goals in the first half in falling to second-seeded Del Oro, 19-9, in the semifinal round of the Sac-Joaquin Section girls' lacrosse championship tournament Thursday night.

The Troubadours end their season with an 11-5 record. The Golden Eagles improve to 15-3 and will face Oak Ridge in the title game Saturday. This is the second year that the CIF-SJS team has sponsored a girls' lacrosse tourney, with area schools previously traveling to the North Coast Section for postseason play.

Freshman Skye Smith added a goal and an assist, senior Olivia Hamm scored on an unassisted drive to end the scoreless stretch in the second, while Zia Smith converted the dime from Skye Smith during a brief comeback run in the third quarter.

Hamm and Z. Smith also had three draw controls while junior defender Sara Ellis picked up three ground balls and caused a pair of DO turnovers, both team highs for the contest.

St. Francis led early in the contest, with Miles netted back-to-back goals in the second and third minutes for a 2-1 edge. Golden Eagle sophomore Grace Sjolie later equalized at the 4:46 mark in the opening quarter, but the Troubies reclaimed the lead when Okamoto connected with S. Smith on a goal with 1:58 remaining in the first.

However, DO midfielder Ellie Rivera scored twice in a 4-0 finish to the quarter, then fellow 10th-grader Riley Weber had three goals and an assist in a 6-0 run to start the second. Yet another Golden Eagle sophomore, middie Heidi Hernnberger, boosted her team's lead to 12-3 by the 3:14 mark before the Troubies finally ended the drought. Z. Smith won the next draw, allowing Hamm to go straight to goal with 3:01 left in the half. St. Francis faced a 14-4 deficit, a 14-6 disadvantage on the draw, and a running clock by the break.

Miles completed her hat trick on another free position just 71 seconds into the second half. The Smith-to-Smith score took place less than a minute later. Then after DO's Jocelyn Martin got a shovel shot into the net, Miles won the ensuing draw. This led to Okamoto's first goal with 9:31 to go, bringing SF to within a 15-7 hole.

However, SF never closed the gap by less than eight the rest of the way. Okamoto hit her second goal on a crease roll with 3:31 left in the third to make it 16-8, only for Sjolie to assist Martin a minute later. The Golden Eagles went into a stall to start the fourth, waiting more than five full minutes before attacking. Sydney Weber converted an eight-meter opportunity to push the lead back to 18-8.

Okamoto had the final Troubie goal of the season with 50 seconds remaining in the game. That marked the 28th on the year and the 104th in the career of the team's lone four-year starter.

Thursday's semifinal marked the career finale for six total SF seniors, including Okamoto. Hamm and Z. Smith were honored earlier in the day as part of the school's spring National Letter of Intent & College Commitment ceremony: their careers will continue at Lynn and Colorado Mesa, respectively. Cami Zucker and Sofia Rabinovitz each had a ground ball and a caused turnover in the backfield. Chloe Tanner also contributed to the defensive corps as she has all season.

Miles' three goals raised her season total to 66, third in school history behind only former teammates Brynley Hodge and Jane Tattersall, who each netted 70 in the 2023 season. Okamoto's assist finished her swan-song year at 40. She holds the program's top four seasons in the MaxPreps era, including 52 as a sophomore.

Z. Smith's 45 goals in 2025 will put her in a tie for 14th in the record book, matching former assistant coach Sarah Westover's senior-season total from 2017. Her 62 draw controls places her ninth in SF history.

Miles also enters the school's season top 10 in points (ninth, 69), points per game (seventh, 4.60) and draw controls (10th, 51). Hamm makes a similar school leaderboard in ground balls with 35 (ninth). Okamoto sits just behind Miles with 68 total points (10th), while her 4.86 ppg is just ahead in sixth.
