ROCKLIN, Calif. – Senior attacker Karly Okamoto posted a team-leading nine points on two goals and seven assists while junior Keira Miles and senior Zia Smith each performed hat tricks, as St. Francis blanked Whitney, 16-0, in the varsity nightcap of a Sierra Foothill League girls' lacrosse doubleheader Thursday night.
The varsity win followed the Troubadour junior varsity squad's first victory of the year, a dominating 18-1 victory in the opener.
Miles netted four goals, including one of the opening draw just 14 seconds into the contest. She easily could have had three others, but two shots clanked off the WIldcat cage while another apparent goal was disqualified. The Denver-bound midfielder stole possession in SF's defensive end and went straight to the goal, but her momentum carried her into the goal circle. Miles also tied teammate Cami Zucker for the team lead of four draw controls, and posted one of the Troubies' 14 caused turnovers.
Smith scored three goals, all assisted from Okamoto: one of Miles' draw control with 4:10 left in the first, then again in the 16th and 24th minutes, helping SF craft a 12-0 halftime lead.
Two of Okamoto's assists came on eight-meter chances in the second half. With the running clock already in play, head coach Julia Southard slowed her offensive output by only permitting assisted goals – including free positions. Thus, Okamoto went to the arc but opted to assist Tristan Garcia (29th) and Chloe Tanner (48th) for her team's 13th and 16th overall goals.
Zucker, Olivia Hamm and Jade Abalateo accounted for the remaining scores. Hamm, Abalateo, Okamoto and freshman Skye Smith each earned two caused turnovers, with Hamm posting a team-high three ground balls.
Okamoto's seven dimes raises her season total to 16 in just four games, and her career sum to 155. She already owns the top three single-season performances in school's MaxPreps history (2008-present): 48 as a freshman, 52 as a sophomore and 39 as a junior.
The varsity win also represents the second career shutout for sophomore goalkeeper Jayel Miller, who only faced two shots for the night. Her previous clean sheet came almost exactly one year prior: an 18-0 road victory at Woodcreek on March 12, 2024.
Preceding the elder Troubies, freshman Molly Smallenberger scored four goals while Delaney McGahan and Taylor Crotsley each added three as St. Francis junior varsity rolled to an 18-1 win in Thursday's opener. Lucia Shepard and Claire Gabri added two goals apiece, with Gabri completing brace before taking over goalkeeping duties from Angela Miles in the second half.
McGahan and Crotsley also posted five controls each, with Natalia Zitelli unsurprisingly leading to other "hustle stats" with three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
St. Francis varsity improves to 4-1 for the season and in SFL play, while the jayvees move to 1-3-1. Both teams return home to host Del Oro on Tuesday for a 5:30/7:15 p.m. doubleheader at Mather Sports Complex.
