JV Gold falls to Folsom to kick off CB tourney

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman guard Colleen Medina scored 17 points while sophomore Mackenzie Tan hit a pair of three-pointers for another 10 points, but St. Francis' Gold junior varsity squad ultimately fell to Folsom, 62-33, in the first round of Christian Brothers La Salle Classic girls' basketball tournament Thursday.

The Troubadours snap their winning streak at three, moving to 4-2 for the season. They will play the loser of the Granite Bay-Lincoln matchup at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Medina poured in seven of St. Francis' nine points in the first quarter, then hit a runner at the 1:58 mark as her team's lone field goal in the second. The Troubies trailed by a 23-9 margin after the first eight minutes of play, as Bulldog freshman Racquel Mauch and sophomore Lily Bingaman led an outburst of 18 unanswered points. SF trailed by a 30-12 margin at the halftime break.

Medina again led the Troubies in scoring in the third, assisting fellow ninth grader Reese Walker at the 5:03 mark, then scoring back-to-back goals at 4:13 and 3:29. Still Folsom's Keira LaComb racked up 10 points during that same period, helping the Dogs pull ahead to a 45-20 margin entering the fourth.

Tan banked a three-pointer at the 6:11 mark in the finale, then later made one of two from the line after drawing a foul on a fast break. Medina also scored a transition bucket at 5:57 and subsequently dropped in a runner in the lane with 5:10 to go, but St. Francis never reduced its deficit by fewer than 22 points. Perpetua Nwaukoni contributed late, with her offensive rebound leading to another Tan three with 2:47 to go. Nwaukoni then converted an offensive board and putback as her team's final field goal at 1:36. She finished with a team-high eight rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive glass.

The JV Gold is one of two SF basketball teams in action this weekend, with varsity competing at the sixth-annual Mike Takayama Memorial Tournament at Del Oro. Coverage of the varsity's action is available elsewhere on GoTroubies.com.
