SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Guard Nevaeh Gavino poured in a career-high 21 points while Lucia Vicio added another 10, leading St. Francis' all-frosh Junior Varsity Red squad to a commanding 53-17 win over El Dorado's frosh team in a Monday afternoon matinee at the SFHS gym.
The Troubadours win their third straight contest, improving to 4-1 overall.
Gavino's 21 tallies surpasses her previous best of 20, set just three days earlier against Nevada Union.
St. Francis never trailed in the contest, scoring 12 unanswered for the first four minutes of play, including a perfect 3-for-3 trip to the charity stripe for Gavino at the 4:20 mark. The Cougars finally broke through when Cameron Boucher hit a running jump shot from the right elbow with 2:49 to go. Eldo continued to rally early in the second, hitting three straight buckets in the first 93 seconds to cut the margin to 14-8. However, Gavino turned a Gianna Seghesio pass into a three-point bomb at the 5:45 mark, igniting a 10-0 run that extended SF's lead to 24-8. The Troubies a 28-10 lead at the halftime break.
Two more transition scores for Gavino, a rebound and putback by Seghesio and a pull-up jumper for Lucia Vicio highlighted an 11-0 run in the third, padding the advantage to 39-10. The Cougars finished the third on a high note with a pair of baskets, only to have SF come out firing in the fourth. Gavino drove the lane, drew the and-one foul, and converted the free throw to kick off what ultimately became a 14-3 quarter.
Bianca Espanola hit two three-pointers en route to eight total points, while Lauren Herbelin and Abbey Pavelchik added another six apiece. Annie Swanson continued her strong play around the boards, collecting 10 total rebounds despite relatively little playing time in the second half.
The youngest Troubie squad was the only one in action at home, as the JV Gold and varsity teams swept Laguna Creek on the road. Coverage of that doubleheader is available elsewhere on GoTroubies.com.
St. Francis JV Red returns to action in a road game at Del Campo on Saturday. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
