JV Red rallies late to finish comeback against undefeated Colfax

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis varsity and JV Red each defeated two previously unbeaten Colfax squads while the Troubadours' JV Gold notched a 6-2 victory over Rio Americano to deliver the 100th career win for head coach Alex Hoang, highlighting a Saturday girls' soccer tripleheader at Cristo Rey High's Adamson Family Sports Complex.

JV Gold opened the day with the decisive win over Rio, then JV Red scored two late goals toward a 2-1 win over the Falcon JV squad before varsity held on to a 3-2 win over its Colfax counterparts.

St. Francis varsity improves to 8-3-3 for the year, taking on a Falcon squad that entered the weekend with a perfect 11-0 mark. Junior Holland Sperber, junior Miley Blough and sophomore Lily Hall scored three unanswered goals for the Troubies before the Falcons managed a comeback with back-to-back set plays in the final six minutes of the contest.

Sperber's goal came courtesy of a Madeline Squaglia pass in the 19th. She fired cross-cage and landed the ball just inside the far post. Colfax managed five shots down the stretch of the first half, including two transition opportunities for senior Kaia Diederichs in the 40th. However, one shot sailed wide right while the other resulted in a save by SF freshman Mia Rabinovitz.

The Troubies seized control of the game in the second, outshooting their hosts by a 7-2 margin in the first 20 minutes out of the break. Norah White had first close call, when she took a perfect cross from Sofia Rabinovitz in the 50th – only to have Colfax keeper Millie Katzeff halt the attempt. Instead, the second goal came in the 60th: Blough drew a foul some 35 yards from the Falcon cage, and delivered a serve that Katzeff tipped but did not save.

SF extended its lead to 3-0 on another long goal, this time from Hall from the left flank in the 67th. Colfax spoiled the shutout bid in the 75th when Mia Rabinovitz saved a free kick from Sophia Smiley, only for junior midfielder Madison Gawley to swoop in for the putback. Then in the 80th, the Falcons added another second-chance play, as junior Kaylee Fore followed her own initial saved shot on a corner kick.

Mia Rabinovitz totaled five saves for the game, with three coming against Smiley on free kicks.

Saturday's action began with the 6-2 win against Rio Americano, marking the 11th win of the year for the undefeated JV Gold and – perhaps more notably – the 100th career win for head coach Alex Hoang, who was honored for the milestone after the game. The Troubies exploded for a 5-0 lead in the first half, including Monet Zauner's second hat trick in three days. Brynn Baker put JV Gold on the board by following up a saved kick from Emma Kryski in the 10th. Eliza Hurley converted Anna George's assist thanks to an initial serve from Liv Vasques-Martin in the 20th. Then Baker sent a quick feed to an adjacent Anna George in the box with just under three minutes remaining.

Meanwhile, Zauner scored her three goals in the 14th, 28th and 30th. Her first score came when the Rio goalkeeper attempted to play a ball short to her defender. Zauner jumped on the pass and went straight to the net. The second goal came on a penalty kick courtesy of Annika Rose, who drew a foul inside the 18. Two minutes after completing her brace, Tallas Schaedler played a long ball from the left side to Zauner, who made the finish in the 30th.

Despite the early dominance for St. Francis, the Raiders managed four straight shots to finish the half and continued that momentum for the majority of the second. Sophomore Sofia Magee put Rio on the board early in the half, tapping in Hazel Shultz' free kick in the 48th. Then Raider freshies Bella Huddleston and Aliyah Buchanan teamed up for a second goal in the 52nd. SF keeper Guinevere O'Brien managed four of her nine total saves after that point to protect the win, then the Baker-George connection in the 77th iced it.

JV Red followed with a comeback win, having surrendered a Kate Machado goal on a corner kick in the 25th minute. Livi Daugherty managed four shots in the final 14 minutes before halftime, and had another one blocked in the 58th. Instead, her offensive work paid off when she set up Paityn Lowery for a scoring drive in the 73rd. Then two minutes later, Josie Quiniola endured a foul along the right edge of the block, sending Caroline Relles to the marker for a successful penalty kick.

JV Red's effort resulted in the first loss for Colfax JV, which came into the contest with a 7-0-2 mark. The win also snapped Red's three-game losing skid, moving the youngest Troubies to 5-6-1 for the year.

Saturday's tripleheader finished the second of three straight three-game weeks for Troubie soccer. All three squads finish their homestand with Sierra Foothill League action against Rocklin on Tuesday, then head to Folsom on Thursday. Then SF varsity and JV Gold visit Christian Brothers for the much-awaited "Holy Cup" rivalry doubleheader on January 25.
