JV Red falls to Davis frosh by 3-1 final

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis sophomore Norah White and junior Madeline Squaglia netted goals in the seventh and 39 minutes, respectively, but a free kick in the final seconds of the 80th minute propelled Davis to a 3-2 win over the Troubadours in the varsity portion of a Sierra Foothill League girls' soccer tripleheader at Cristo Rey Thursday night.

SF moves to 7-3-3 for the season with a 3-3-1 mark in league games. Davis improves to 5-2-2 overall with a 3-2-2 SFL record.

White's goal came courtesy of a serve from junior Miley Blough, giving the Troubies the initial 1-0 lead. However, the Blue Devils equalized on a Jordan Meade header in the 14th, then moved ahead when sophomore Faith Heringer buried a long shot from the left flank in the 22nd. Sophomore Lacey Harmon had a shot saved shortly after that go-ahead, then White barely missed high on an attempt in the 30th.

St. Francis knotted up the contest with less than two minutes left before halftime, thanks to a long throw-in from senior Jada Dwyre. Squaglia won the second ball after the throw, and found the back of the net to even the proceedings at 2-2.

The Troubies managed 11 shots in the second half, with five on goal, but could not take the lead. Meanwhile, they dodged a bullet with DSHS junior Madison Lujan cracked an open shot that barely missed over the crossbar in the 46th. The Blue Devils threatened with four attempts in the final 12 minutes, including three set pieces. SF freshman goalkeeper Mia Rabinovitz saved two of the first three, with Kailani Compton's free kick sailing high in the 70th.

Finally, with a mere five seconds remaining in regulation, Davis senior Miya Alamares and St. Francis senior Maggie Koerwitz collided just outside the right edge of the penalty box. The Blue Devils summoned senior Audrey Aguirre for ensuing kick, which cleared the Troubie wall and a leaping Rabinovitz for the go-ahead goal.

St. Francis advanced into its attacking third twice during the two extra minutes of stoppage time, but did not threaten the cage.

The Troubadours and Blue Devils previously were rivals in the Delta League, with both programs moving to the SFL after the 2024 realignment. The series rates as one of the most competitive for each school, with Davis holding a 14-10-13 overall record in the head-to-head matchup.

The varsity contest followed a 3-3 tie between the Blue Devil junior varsity and the Troubadour JV Gold squad. Freshman Monet Zauner performed her first SF hat trick, all in a span of four minutes after Davis had taken a 2-0 lead. After Davis sophomore Chloe Ehlers converted a penalty kick in the 63rd, Zauner drew a foul from Leah Dombrowski inside the 18. Zauner handled her own PK, and put the Troubies on the board.

Moments after the subsequent center pass, Zauner gained possession near the fleur-de-lis logo at the center of the Adamson Family Sports Complex field, then went straight to the Davis cage for the 2-2 equalizer in the 65th. Soon after, SF ended up on the attack yet again. Zauner had an initial shot blocked and Charlotte Lippi had her follow-up carom off the bar, but the ball glanced off a Blue Devil defender for a corner kick. Freshman Tallas Schaedler handled the set piece and found Zauner for the hat trick goal in the 67th.

Davis managed to salvage the draw when Daniela Carrasquilla drew a foul well beyond the penalty box along the right side. Sophomore Holly Nichols, who scored the first Blue Devil goal on a free kick in the 28th, repeated the feat in the 72nd.

Finally, St. Francis JV Red finished the tripleheader with a 3-1 loss to the Davis frosh. The Blue Devils netted back-to-back in the 12th and 13th minutes to craft an early 2-0 lead, then Troubie freshman Paityn Lowery drove the right side of the field for a goal in the 24th. Lowery had another breakaway chance in the 30th with a shot at an equalizer, but Davis keeper Norah Ecklund came up with the save.

All three Troubie teams return to action on Saturday for a non-league tripleheader. JV Gold opens the day with a 10 a.m. contest against Rio Americano, then JV Red and varsity face Colfax at noon and 2 p.m., respectively. The weekend matinee also features a tri-tip barbecue in lieu of a concession stand, with meals available for presale at GoFan (https://gofan.co/event/2988308?schoolId=CA8032). Tickets for the games are free. Head coach Alex Hoang holds a 99-7-11 career record at the helm of the JV Gold program, with hopes of cracking the century mark in Saturday's opener.
