FOLSOM, Calif. – St. Francis outshot its host by a 21-9 margin while freshman goalkeeper Mia Rabinovitz notched six saves en route to her sixth shutout, but neither team found the back of the net in a scoreless draw at Folsom in the varsity portion of a Sierra Foothill League girls' soccer tripleheader at Prairie City Stadium Thursday night.
The Troubadours move to 8-4-4 for the season and 3-4-2 in league games. The Bulldogs are now 5-3-4 overall with a 2-3-4 SFL record.
On either side of the varsity draw, St. Francis' junior varsity teams each overcame early deficits to claim victories. JV Gold fell into a 2-0 hole before storming back for six unanswered goals, while JV Red trailed 1-0 in the first half and 2-1 early in the second before recovering for a 3-2 triumph.
Junior Miley Blough led SF varsity with seven total shots, including three on goal. Sophomore Norah White managed another five attempts, including a blast that rattled off the crossbar in the 74th minute. White also drew fouls that led to close calls on the scoring column. In the 53rd, Blough handled the free kick from some 40 yards out and missed just high of the cage. Then in the 66th, White was tripped along the left flank. Lacey Harmon handled the kick, which could not quite find a charging Jada Dwyre in the box. Harmon and Dwyre had a second chance to combine for a goal in the 72nd, but keeper Sierra Ruehl gloved Dwyre's header.
Harmon also helped out Rabinovitz by blocking a Folsom shot in the 21st, not long after Marissa Ow did the same. In fact, the SF back line offered outstanding support for its keeper, especially given the absences of defensive standouts Maggie Koerwitz and Estella Bacsafra. Madeline Squaglia and Carly Hall joined Sarah Bashore to hold the Bulldogs to single digits in attempts.
Folsom had its best chance to score in the 57th, when senior Sarah Fonseca had an open look on a shot – only for Rabinovitz to make the stop.
In Thursday's opener, JV Gold dominated the Bulldogs with goals from Emma Kryski (30'), Brynn Baker (35'), Tallas Schaedler (46'), Anna George (59'), Monet Zauner (63') and Azaria Agbodike (68'), erasing a surprising 2-0 start for the Bulldogs. St. Francis dominated the game from start to finish, but Folsom managed to invade the Troubies' defensive third in the fifth and 20th minutes to craft a 2-0 lead.
The Gold Troubies had 12 shots to the Bulldogs' three before finally getting on the board. A handball call allowed Kryski to launch a kick over the top and into the cage. Baker then netted the equalizer, following an initial saved shot from Eliza Hurley, sending the two teams into halftime in a 2-2 impasse.
Then just 5:20 into the second half, SF hit the go-ahead: Zauner stole a goal kick then assisted Schaedler to make it 3-2. Zauner had a second assist in the 59th, firing a shot that Folsom halted. George was in perfect position for the putback, extending the lead to 4-2. Then four minutes later, George drew a foul, giving Trinity Ito a free kick. The Bulldog goalkeeper stopped Ito's kick but Zauner swooped in for the goal. Finally, Agbodike sent in the sixth Troubie score thanks to Lauren Mikacich's outlet from the right side.
JV Gold remains undefeated for the season with a 13-0-2 mark.
Wrapping up the tripleheader was JV Red, which fell into a 1-0 hole when an errant pass found its way into the cage for an own goal in the 23rd. The Troubies managed to erase that initial hole when Elizabeth McNearney launched a long serve through the keeper's hands with just 40 seconds left in the half, but Folsom regained the lead in the 44th minute in the wake of a corner kick.
St. Francis repeatedly threatened the Bulldog cage, including a flurry of Paityn Lowery shots in the 52nd through 55th minutes. Instead, it was Charlotte Kryski's launch from almost 50 yards out that tied the game at 2-2 in the 71st. More importantly, that goal palpably shifted the morale and momentum to the Troubies. Isabella Leyva and Gabby Federico each made key defensive plays down the stretch, while goalkeeper Xitlali Rosales made her fourth save in the 74th. Finally, Lowery was rewarded for her numerous offensive chances – this time on an assist from McNearney in the 75th.
All three St. Francis soccer squads return to action in the much-awaited "Holy Cup" rivalry series at Christian Brothers on Saturday. JV Red begins the day with a 10 a.m. matchup in what is believed to be that program's first-ever participation in the rivalry. JV Gold follows at noon, with varsity finishing the day with a 2 p.m. start. Troubie varsity has never lost to the Falcons during the MaxPreps era of the series (2006-present), although the two teams have tied in five of the last seven meetings.
