Relay foursome wraps 2023 season at state meet

CLOVIS, Calif. – The foursome of Grace Dunham, Daphne Witherell, Kelsey Sutch and Kayla Towne compiled a time of nine minutes, 30.52 seconds to place 14th in the girls' 4x800 relay, closing out St. Francis' 2023 season at the CIF State Track & Field Championships, hosted at Buchanan High School's Veterans Memorial Stadium Saturday.

The 4x800 relay is the newest event on the CIF championship program. The Troubadours finished second at each of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I and SJS Masters championship meets with school-record 9:26.91 each time.

Saturday's 9:30.52 has only been surpassed two squads in school history. The crew of Megan Alexander, Katie Hartman, Sarah Krtil and Ingrid Kantola went 9:28.66 at the 2003 Stanford Invite, then the Dunham-Witherell-Sutch-Towne team eclipsed that former school record 20 years later.

The state championship is also the final prep meet for Witherell, the relay team's lone senior. The Amherst-bound Witherell is one of four 2023 Troubie graduates competing in collegiate track & field or cross country, along with pole vaulter Maddie Pelfrey (pole vault), distance runner Paige Quigley (Seton Hall) and middle distance runner Sarah Charles (Chapman).
