RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — Senior goalkeeper Bella McCullough totaled 12 saves in the varsity game while Olivia Hamm and Zia Smith each netted two goals in the junior varsity opener, but St. Francis dropped both ends of a non-league girls' lacrosse doubleheader to Oak Ridge at Mather Sports Complex Wednesday night.
The Troubadour varsity lost by a 19-2 final, while the JV fell, 19-5.
SFHS snaps a five-game winning streak to move to 6-2 for the season. The visiting Trojans entered the game ranked 16th nationally and fifth in the state, according to MaxPreps.com.
In the varsity nightcap, freshman Karly Okamoto and senior Zahra Smith accounted for the two Troubie goals. Okamoto scored on a crease roll in the 11th minute of the game, while Smith picked up a would-be SF turnover inside the eight-meter arc, then flipped the ball into the Trojan cage.
Oak Ridge held a 7-2 lead at halftime, with McCullough stopping six attempts on goal. However, the Troubies ran afoul of yellow cards in the contest and played most of the second half short-handed by two players. McCullough had six more saves plus an interception but the Trojans scored 12 unanswered after the break, with 10 of those goals coming with a two-player advantage on the field.
In the opener, Hamm, Smith and Olivia Alvernaz totaled the five Troubadour goals while Sofia Rainbolt posted four saves. Oak Ridge ran up a 14-2 lead in the first half, then largely called off the attack in the second.
Wednesday's game marks the second of a stretch of seven straight home dates for St. Francis lacrosse. The two teams return to action on Friday against Bella Vista. First draw is 5:30 for JV, 7 p.m. for varsity.
