SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Marissa Ow scored on a Miley Blough corner kick less than a minute into the contest, but St. Francis surrendered three goals on set pieces in a 3-1 loss to Rocklin in the varsity segment of a Sierra Foothill League girls' soccer tripleheader at Cristo Rey's Adamson Family Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.
The Troubadours slip to 8-2 overall and drop to 2-1 in SFL play. The Thunder improves to 4-2 for the season with a 2-1 mark in league contests. The meeting was originally scheduled as a December 11 SFL opener, but the teams moved the date to an open Saturday later in the season due to the unavailability of numbers players early in December.
The varsity loss was also part of a winless day for St. Francis, as JV Red opened the set with a 4-0 loss to the Thunder frosh-soph, then JV Gold salvaged a 2-2 draw thanks to a 75th-minute goal in the finale.
Ow's goal stood as the first of eight Troubadour shots in the first half of the varsity contest, with four in the first 10 minutes and another four in the final three before halftime. Other than that, Rocklin controlled possession for most of the half. A foul just outside the left corner of the penalty box in the 27th resulted in Ella Johnson converting the kick for the equalizer.
Senior Allyson Walker hit the go-ahead on a corner kick in the 47th, with Johnson completing a brace on another free kick about three minutes later. The Troubies managed seven shots in the second half, but none on goal. Blough had the closest attempt with about three minutes remaining. Lacey Harmon was fouled hard along the left side, and Blough's kick caromed off the crossbar
Junior goalkeeper and Colfax transfer Millie Katzeff made her SF debut with four saves in the first half, then sophomore Mia Rabinovitz handled second-half duties with four stops of her own.
JV Red surrendered two goals off corner kicks within a span of three minutes in the first half, then an Ella Val blast made its way into the net for the third Thunder goal in the 18th. SF found offensive chances in the final minutes before the break, with Isla Pattni and Ava Arnold uncorking shots in the 34th and 40th, respectively. Still, the Thunder dominated possession in their offensive third, with SF keeper Jaycee Martinez facing enough shots to post a staggering nine saves in each half.
The Troubies JV Gold squad drew first blood when a Cali Chambers steal gave way to Hazel Pryor's goal in the 10th minute. That lead proved short-lived, as Rocklin sophomore Chloe Kadden bombed a shot from high above the box into the upper left corner for the 1-1 equalizer. The Thunder then took the lead when Avery Saunders went cross-cage to find the left side of the frame in the 23rd.
SF Gold came close to a second goal in the 21st when Anna George could not get enough of a Chambers cross for an accurate shot. George followed soon after with another shot, but the Rocklin keeper made a diving save to force a corner kick. Sophia Kennedy-Contreras managed a shot on the ensuing play, but Kadden swooped in for the block to protect her team's lead.
The Troubies outshot their guest by a 13-1 margin in the second half, but it took a relatively fortunate break to result in the equalizer. On a corner kick with a little more than five minutes remaining, George delivered a ball that banked off a Rocklin defender and into the cage. Several Thunder players claimed that the ball briefly crossed past the end line before George sent in her shot, but the entire sequence took place on the opposite corner of the linesman, with the cage and the activity in the mixer obstructing his view.
Saturday's tripleheader marked the first athletics event of any kind for St. Francis in the 2026 calendar year, and kicked off a three-date homestand that continues with Whitney (Tuesday) and Del Oro (Thursday).
