Troubie swim places second at section finals

LODI, Calif. – Junior Ava Chavez broke her own school record in her 200-yard freestyle individual title, then took part in two second-place freestyle relays that also cracked previous program benchmarks, leading St. Francis to a Division I runner-up finish at the Sac-Joaquin Section swimming championships at Tokay High Saturday.

This marks the Troubadours' highest finish since they won back-to-back SJS titles in 2010 and 2011.

In all, five SFHS records were rewritten on Saturday: Chavez' 200 free, the two relays, plus the leadoff split in the 200 free relay.

Chavez won the 200 free at1:48.74, almost three full seconds faster than the next competitor, and more than a full second ahead of her own previous benchmark of 1:49.90, set two days early during the trials session. She then led off the 200 free relay to a second-place 1:35.81. Chavez was followed by Erica Jaffe, Maddy Ching and LK Holliday. That group set the previous record of 1:36.15 at the Delta League finals in April.

Chavez' leadoff split in that relay came in at 23.73, erasing yet another school record: Alex Rieger went 23.89 back in 2011.

St. Francis added another second-place finish (and 37 team points) in the 400 free relay with a 3:28.05. Jaffe led off that race with a 51.99 split, with M. Ching and Grace Mering following. Chavez then brought it in with a 50.32 finish. That group set the old 400 free relay mark of 3:29.08 at the league championships.

Other high varsity finishes belonged to Chavez, who placed second in the 500 free at 4:53.66; Jaffe, who went fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:04.03) and third in the 100 backstroke (54.91), and Maddy Ching's fourth in 100 fly (55.56).

The top three varsity places plus those who hit the automatic qualifying standards for the state championships, held in Clovis next week. Jaffe's 200 IM time easily surpasses the 2:04.75 auto standard, M. Ching's 100 fly time missed the automatic cutoff by .06 but will fall under consideration for qualifying. Mering won the 100 back consols at 57.33, also within the consideration standard.

On the JV side, Mia Hill placed fifth in the 200 IM (2:14.47) and third in the 100 breast (1:07.65). She joined Piper Brostrom, Gabriella Ching and Alexis DeAngelis as part of a fifth-place 200 medley relay (1:68.35) and fourth-place 200 free relay (1:44.92).
