Troubie softball falls to DO big bats

LOOMIS, Calif. – Junior third baseman Jocelyn Villaflor hit 2-for-3 while Kaili Heeb and Olivia Meisner added hits, but St. Francis fell to an early 5-0 deficit and ultimately dropped an 8-1 final to Del Oro in Sierra Foothill League girls' softball action Wednesday.

The Troubadours dip to 11-13 for the year with a 4-8 record in league play, moving into a tie for fifth place with Oak Ridge. The Golden Eagles improve to 15-7 overall and stay atop the SFL standings alongside Whitney at 10-2. In fact, Del Oro and Whitney have each scored 61 runs with 18 against in their respective 12 league games.

Villaflor had St. Francis' lone RBI, driving in Marissa Jensen in the fourth. Jensen led off the inning with a walk, then Heeb battled back from an 9-2 count with an opposite-field base knock. Villaflor followed with a long single to left: Heeb had to hold up between bases to make sure left fielder Presley Brening did not chase down the deep fly ball. However, Jensen easily scored from second to put the Troubies on the board.

Unfortuately for SF, Del Oro freshman Karis Herstam retired the next three Troubies in order, including two via punchouts. That fourth was the last offensive St. Francis threat for the remainder of the game, with a Chloe Hoertsch hit by pitch representing the team's lone baserunner in the final three frames.

Meanwhile, DO sophomore Emma Johnson finished 3 of 3 with two homers and five RBIs, while center fielder Caelyn Campos went 4-for-4 in the leadoff spot. The Golden Eagles pushed across two runs in the first inning and three in the second, then a more sustained rally in the sixth tacked on three more runs. DO had nine hits for the game but also received help from five SF errors.

St. Francis returns home on Friday to host Oak Ridge for its home finale. The 4:30 first pitch also features the annual Booster-Q barbecue, plus Senior Day festivities for seven total seniors: Jensen, Isabella Barge, Alexis McFarland, Reese Lewis, Jaeya Leavitt, Julia Nielsen and manager Lilly Desmond.
